模拟登录火星的任务Mars500，其6名“宇航员”在2月1日抵达火星，6名成员呆在全封闭的舱室内，没有任何窗户。
火星的两颗卫星，其名字意义分别为“恐惧”和“惊慌”。Mars500人员能看到的，是模拟的画面。一个小红球渐渐变成了占满整个屏幕(或者应该叫太空窗) 的庞然大物。当Mars500人员接近“火星”时，他们接到了很多新任务，这让他们的生活变得更忙碌，也更充实。
接下来，6名成员将分为2组，登陆组将下到“火星”表面，轨道组则留在“轨道”。轨道组成员会支援登陆组，在火星表面“驾驶”一辆虚拟的火星车（只有靠近火星，才能真的实时驾驶火星车），同时为返回地球做准备。
这里不是说实际登陆火星的情形，而是这次虚拟任务中，“轨道组成员将是 我们在天上的眼睛，忙于为登陆组提供支持，并驱动在火星表面的一辆虚拟火星车。”轨道组在绕火星运行，所以并不是一直操纵火星车，而是“只有当轨道组绕火星过程中离火星车比较近的时候，才能进行实时操控”，话句话说，距离比较远时，实时控制权并不在轨道组手上。
对登陆组来说，他们“登陆”后看到的东西，都将是通过封闭的太空服系统传入眼中的。即使这样，这也会是他们在这500天封闭环境中看到的最广阔的地方。
EVA（舱外活动，即extra vehicular activity）的过程中，除6名“宇航员”外的所有工作人员都将远离模拟项目地点，以免影响任务模拟的真实性。
Mars500人员正在训练以迎接接下来的任务，2月1日，“宇航员”打开火星登陆舱，将一些物资从飞行器转移到登陆舱，并从飞行前半段当做储物空间的登陆舱中取出一些物品放进飞行器。然后配置好所有登陆火星表面时需要用到的硬件设备。
中国小伙王跃，和另2名成员（Aleksandr Smoleevsky和Diego）会进入50立方米的登陆舱中，并在那个虚拟的红色星球生活1个月。
Mars500项目是为期520天的火星旅行模拟测试，由欧洲航天局负责，至少持续至2011年11月。3名俄罗斯人、1名意大利人、1名法国人和1名中国人从2010年6月初起呆在一个位于俄罗斯的密闭空间里。王跃是中国航天员科研训练中心航天员教员，航空航天与航海医学硕士，曾先后参与神舟七号载人航天飞行任务和我国第二批航天员选拔工作。
