为了更好地了解这个过程，瑞士日内瓦大学的Jeremy Luban和同事搜索了过去的基因治疗试验，试图寻找DNA中基因插入位点与特征之间的关系图。对于12种逆转录病毒的3种，研究者们发现了受者DNA中的一组蛋白质，这种蛋白质的存在对于插入位点的预测具有75%的成功率（PLoS Computational Biology, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pcbi.1001008）。
英国伦敦帝国学院的Peter Cherepanov不是研究团队的成员，他认为，由于可以估算不良插入的概率，因此平衡成功机会与副作用风险将会更加容易。
