巴西的密林中隐藏着一些地球上最危险的生物，但雨林中的蚂蚁面对的敌人更为可怕——寄生真菌。
在最近的一次实地考察中，美国宾州州立大学与国际农业与生物科学研究中心的研究者在巴西的热带雨林确认了四种古老的真菌，能够感染蚂蚁。它们会占据蚂蚁的身体，释放化学物质控制蚂蚁的行动，来到合适自己繁衍的地方再夺其性命，留下一具紧紧咬住叶脉的尸体，好让真菌释放孢子继续感染其他蚂蚁。
1859年，英国博物学家、与达尔文同时代的华莱士(Alfred Russel Wallace)最早记录了印尼苏拉威西岛上的“僵尸蚁真菌”，可惜他采集的样本因沉船未能存留；后来法国巴黎的一间博物馆保存的寄生真菌样本在1941年借给日本研究者后也遗失了。
研究者最近发表在《公共科学图书馆·综合》（Plos One）杂志上的文章，描述了四种寄生在不同木蚁身上的真菌。这种真菌的生命形式是匪夷所思的：孢子落在蚂蚁身上时就会利用一种酶侵入宿主身体，1周左右蚂蚁体内的真菌释放化学物质就会控制蚂蚁离开蚁群，爬到适合真菌生长的地方。蚂蚁死亡后，真菌会慢慢从其头部长出形成芽孢，释放孢子再次寻找猎物。研究指出，如果孢子在释放1天之内感染蚂蚁失败，留在地面的孢子还会长出第二个竖直的芽孢，好在蚂蚁经过时“抓住”它们。
