地下线虫新 物种

科学家曾经在距地表2700多米的地球内部发现过单细胞生物，不过对于多细胞生物来说，地球深处的自然环境太恶劣了，因为在地表以下，无论是温度条件，氧气浓度，能量来源还是生活空间都会受到很大的限制。

不过，美国普林斯顿大学的地理学家Tullis Onstott和他的比利时，南非以及荷兰的同事在6月2日的《自然》杂志上报道了一种新发现的可以在地表以下生存的多细胞线虫，这种线虫被命名为Halicephalobus mephisto。

Halicephalobus mephisto是在南非的贝娅特里克丝女王金矿（Beatrix gold mine）中被发现的，这种线虫可以居住在地表3.6千米以下的地下水里。这种线虫很小，大约只有0.52-0.56毫米长。它以地下细菌为食，还可以忍耐37摄氏度左右的温度。Halicephalobus mephisto还能忍耐极低的氧气。在它生活的的水域氧含量比大多数海洋的1%还要少。

这项研究的意义主要在于研究极端环境中的生命。
