世界第一种糖尿病异种移植疗法被批准在俄罗斯使用，这种疗法将动物细胞移植进人体。
这种疗法是由新西兰LCT(Living Cell Technologies)公司开发的，目地是治疗1型糖尿病，即自身胰岛素分泌不足的糖尿病。在“海草”外衣中包有能制造胰岛素的猪细胞。
1型糖尿病病因是胰腺中制造胰岛素的细胞不能正常工作，而胰岛素在控制血液中葡萄糖水平上至关重要，因此病人需要每天注射胰岛素。不过，如果注射剂量出错的话，可能会让血糖水平变化过大，造成昏厥以及心血管和神经系统问题，这可能会降低寿命。
LCT的疗法是用手术将猪细胞移植入病人胰腺，“海草”外衣则是硅酸盐，可以防止免疫系统攻击外来细胞。
在俄罗斯进行的试验中，8名1型糖尿病患者在2007年6月接受了该疗法，之后仍然每天注射胰岛素。1年后，6人血糖控制情况有加强，并能够降低每日胰岛素使用量。2人在8个月的时间中完全停止了胰岛素注射。此外有1人停止了实验，另有1人没有表现出改善，对于这个问题LCT公司认为是将细胞植入胰腺时出了问题。
